Completing the Tasks on Your Plate

Completing the tasks you don’t like to do is not a new concept. Working on easy tasks requires a smaller mental commitment than if you tackled difficult tasks first. Most people believe this works best as you then have more time to spend on difficult tasks.
Successful leadership holds you accountable to the work you need to do just like with your employees. The best performing companies have leaders instill confidence in their employees in doing the work they believe is difficult to them. Getting people to actually want to do the tasks you need them to do can be a challenge. People who are not fully committed to their tasks need motivation to help move them forward. Many leaders need to be motivated to complete your tasks as well. This shows employees you have difficult tasks also that you have to do as well.

In order to be productive you need to accomplish things that may not be as fun as you would like, yet to get to the “fun” part of the job, the things you like to do, there are always things people don’t like to do as well. Prioritize what you have and start from there.

Most likely you prefer doing things your own way because you know how to get the task done by your own standards. Every task has your own unique touch that is yours. Underneath it all you take responsibility for the work that is considered as yours.

Break Down Your Task into Small Pieces

Getting started is where things get difficult. We generally like to avoid tasks we hate for as long as possible. When we finally get started, we might get stuck for ages. Focus on only performing “the next step.”

It gives you a sense of satisfaction. With this in mind, there are many different ways to achieve the same thing. Encourage yourself to do something you hate doing. Then change the task to make it more enjoyable. Essentially motivate yourself to complete the task by thinking of more effective and efficient ways to get the job done. After you complete your own task, give yourself a small reward.

Give It Meaning

Start with a task you repel and turn it into a task you are compelled to do by asking yourself an important question: “In completing this task what does it mean in the grand scheme of what I do as a leader?” You dread doing them and then don’t which leads you to procrastination. The only problem is that the task(s) still need to get done. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get them out of the way. Don’t create any more stress on yourself than you already created to hated these tasks.

Make the Most Out of Your Time

Know that the tasks you hate are essential to your overall success. You wouldn’t do them if they weren’t. Sometimes the most boring tasks are those you repeat over and over again. How can you best complete the task(s) you dislike or hate. You can give yourself a small reward when you complete them.

Make it Complete!

There you are looking back over the year. You are thinking about all that you accomplished and notice some of the things you didn’t accomplish. There is the little pain in your stomach and a thought of “If only I had done that.” It is normal to feel this way. When we look at past desires that haven’t come into the physical form it is easy to feel a sense of regret. The only rule here is to make that regret complete! Yes, you can make the desire or goal complete in the New Year!

Making your goal complete is bringing it forward to move it into physical form. Sometimes when we have goals we make them huge and really far out there. Just because you didn’t see your desire manifest this past year does not mean it isn’t on its way. There is a Universal Law called the Law of Gender. This law states that for anything to come into form it must first go through a gestation period. Some call this law the Law of Gestation. Gestation periods bring to life the completed physical form. It is simple to see in the case of pregnancy. Everyone knows with a normal pregnancy it takes about 9 months to grow and then birth the baby. The same is true with your goals, dreams, and desires!

Goals, dreams, and desires must also go through a developmental stage in order to become complete. The first step is to know where you are and the second step is to know where you are going. The how part comes as the process moves. Sometimes you will have a crystal clear vision of how to help your desires become complete and see them in your physical reality. The times that you aren’t so clear can be the sticky point. This is the time when most people get discouraged and start to give up on what it is they want. See the Universe is working hard to bring that desire to you and it takes time for it to reach you. Your patience is the key to making it complete!

Patience is a skill and it must be developed. Some ways to helping with the skill and ensuring that your dreams will manifest and become complete are to trust, know, relax, and have fun! Trusting that you deserve what you want is number one. Many people have a hard time with trusting that they deserve anything. Now you may be thinking that you deserve everything but do you really TRUST it at your core? Think about it, think about times in your life that you really wanted something and you didn’t get it. What went through your mind? What goes through your mind now about that situation? The more you get clear with this the more you can uncover beliefs that are holding you back!

When you are holding yourself back you do not believe that your dream is going to become complete and take on its physical form. Believing is one step below knowing. Knowing is where in your core you KNOW that what you want is on its way. Nobody or nothing could tell you anything different. Now ask yourself, do you know that your dream will complete itself and you will see it come to fruition? Is there anything that could change your mind about it? Is there any situation that could move you in a different direction? Remember we are getting clear so we can become complete and see our dreams from the moment it was conceived to the moment it is birthed into reality. Be extremely honest with yourself.

Next, relax in your trust and knowing. You can keep your focus on what you are creating and check in to see how you feel. Are you tense all the time? Are you worried? Are you pushing to “make” things work? If so think of some ways to relax and let your goal move to its completed form. Take walks daily, get sun, meditate and calm your thoughts. Let your body flow with your day. Really do you want to be all worked up about your life or do you want to enjoy your life? You can do either but when it comes to completely your goals wouldn’t you rather do it while having fun?

Which brings us to the last point and that is to make it complete by having FUN! How are you bringing your dreams into life in a fun manner? Are you engaging others with your ideas? Are you creating new ways to bring your goal to life? Are you laughing while you work? Are you feeling inspired? Check in with yourself again and be honest. This is feedback and you can adjust what you are doing to make it more exciting. When you are feeling awesome about something people can feel that. They start enjoying your goal with you. They start to want it for you as well. Imagine what that kind of support would do for you in regards to making your dreams complete!

To make your dreams, ideas, and goals complete remember to check in with yourself. Be honest and find where you are with your emotions. Are you trusting, knowing, relaxing, and having fun? What areas need some attention? What areas are you doing awesome in? You have time so keep going. Now is your time to make it complete!

The Completion Series – Part II

Many people are fairly complete except for one thing. There is that one thing that is holding them back that they are simply resistant to do. This suggests that there are unconscious patterns that keep you from being in completion. Are you overcommitted? Over-committers want to do too much and, therefore, get very little done. Over-commitment is a self-sabotage move. We over-commit and then we go to bed every single night feeling incomplete. We have set ourselves up to feel like failures.

Are you a chronic procrastinator? Procrastinators don’t have to show up all the way! If you procrastinated writing a term-paper for school and then got a “C” on that paper, you can say it’s because you didn’t have enough time or that you put it off too long. By procrastinating, you gave yourself an unconscious excuse in case you didn’t do well. What if you went all-in and still only got a “C”? That idea may surprisingly scare you! Behind all of that procrastination of writing your paper, you probably spent endless hours with the thought of needing to work on that paper. Wasting time and energy thinking about doing it is a massive energy drain, it would take much less time to just do it and this energy drain reduces or depletes your impact.

Are you interested in a relationship that works? If you have 5 years worth of with-holding built up, how mad are you? With-holding takes up a ton of energy. You need to actually say what you want to say, don’t wait until “the appropriate time.” Say whatever it is as you feel it and get it out of the way.

Getting complete is not a moral issue. It is not about being good or bad. Living in a state of completion is an aliveness issue and an impact issue, as it gives you the ability to be effective.

Experts have followed Corporate Executives around for weeks and recognized certain trends as follows:

CEO’s have a 100% completion rate in their daily routines. No matter what came up during the day, the CEO’s gave the issue their full attention until the matter was complete. Then they moved on to the next thing.

Presidents (who are just one step down from the CEO) have an average of 5 incompletes in their daily routines.

Vice Presidents have an average of 14 incompletes in their daily routine.

The list goes on from there accordingly. Do you see the pattern?

This is because it took their efforts take more steps than the CEO because they split their attention instead of giving each situation their full attention. So, they were less effective and had less impact.

The more items that were left incomplete in their day, the less value they were providing to their company, and the lesser position they were granted. The less incompletes in the daily routine, the greater value they have to the company, and subsequently, the more money they were making.

People who are hanging out in incompletion are not having maximum impact. If you are spinning out of control, you must effectively complete what you start in order to have the energy to make a lasting impact.

The good news is that as you do complete things, you get huge energy releases. Think about the last time you completed a task that seemed daunting. Remember that giant exhale you took when you knew the task was actually complete? You freed up the energy you had stored away to actually complete that task. Now that source of energy is back within your body and you immediately feel better.

What are some of the reasons that we don’t complete? Are there any fears behind getting things complete?

Are you afraid of success? Will I lose my identity if this comes to completion?

Are you afraid of what may be coming up next once this item is complete? Are you in fear of the unknown that comes with completing something long overdue?

Could a part of your incompletion be a fear of accountability? (Such as, I’ve been working on this project for a long time and if I complete it and my boss isn’t happy with it, they will hold me accountable.) Your belief, therefore, may be that if I finish this I will be given additional responsibility and obligation.

How about the idea that if I don’t complete, then others won’t count on me to show up? Do you fail to complete because there is a great excuse that goes along with it? (“Honey, I would have been home on time but I was so busy working on that project!”) We use that busy to not show up and to hide out. That is a victim’s defense by the way. (I’m being held hostage by this project!) Is your failure to complete things possibly due to underlying guilt? (If I am accountable and my project doesn’t work, then I will feel guilty.)

Do I have a fear of being visible? If we are not hiding behind stuff that is not complete, then we are visible. What if people were focused on me rather than my project? If you are not able to complete, then expectations of you are lowered and you avoid additional responsibilities.

Have you ever had this underlying belief, “If I finished all of my projects and had time for myself, I would be selfish, and selfish is not a good thing,” or, “I would be bored and have nothing to do.”

How about this one, “I like it where I’m at…it is comfortable. What will be on the other side of this box if I move myself out of it?” This is a fear of the unknown.

Think about a time when you were so worried about something that you couldn’t sleep, or that you woke up in the night in a panic. That panic is undoubtedly about something that is not yet complete.

If you notice yourself feeling sleepy at the thought of all of this, it is because you are subconsciously dealing with completions in your brain. That is what the brain does. It searches for patterns. You are already beginning to feel the weight of what is going on. Notice your breathing and feelings. Get clear with them. There is a physical impact on your body. These are symptoms of the anxiety that being incomplete creates. So, if you are beginning to feel exhausted, physically move around the room, shake your body, flap your wings, clap your hands a little bit and bring your focus back to your list.

Look at your list of incompletion from today. How does it make you feel? Get a sense of this feeling because you are carrying it with you all of the time.

I knew of a case of a client who had Fibromyalgia and the person was full of incompletion issues. Their Life Coach helped them form a list of those incompletion items and as they cleaned up the messes, the pain left their body. We are not designed to be incomplete, we are designed to finish.

It all boils down to 3 things:

1. Fear of Aliveness. (How alive are we willing to be?)
2. Fear of Death. (If we complete that project, it is done…dead. We are scared of the open space that completion creates.)
3. Fear of Making an Impact. I invite you to ask yourself, “Where have I been the most afraid to make an impact?” “Where would I like to have an impact the most in my own life?”

The reason we don’t have an impact is only because we are afraid. We exaggerate the fear by creating a big story about how scary it is to do what we want to do. You let the story stop you. How does it feel to be helpless about making the impact that you want to make instead of just feeling the fear? Usually, that is just a fear that you have been afraid to feel. This can show up as withdrawing, avoidance, and paralyzing fear. We want something that we’ve never experienced before. What is between you and what you want is just something you haven’t felt yet.
